The legacy
of the years and
the excellence
of today.

Over the decades, the Château des Thermes has passed through eras, transformations, and rebirths to become the exceptional destination you know today.

Between thermal heritage, hotel development, well-being, and gastronomy, discover the major milestones that have shaped the history of the estate and its unique identity in the heart of Chaudfontaine.

1750

The origins of the estate

In 1750, Hauster and its two factories were purchased by Léonard De Hayme, then Mayor of Liège. The Château was then described as a "beautiful pleasure house," but the industrial buildings included in the lot were in poor condition and required intervention.

In 1803, the De Hayme family sold the property to Jean Gosuin, already the owner of the Fabrique Nationale d'Armes in Herstal. His son, Jean Joseph, then transformed it into a rolling mill.

The industrial era

Successively transformed into a rolling mill and then operated by the Gosuin and Nagelmackers families, the site became a major industrial player in the Liège region.

On the eve of the 1914–1918 war, the rolling mills had grown in importance, employing 62 workers. The factories, operated by S.A. Laminoirs Nagelmackers et Cie, functioned until 1955.

The return of thermalism

In 1979, the Municipality of Chaudfontaine undertook to revive the site's thermal tradition by relaunching well-being activities in the heart of this emblematic location.

This initiative marked the beginning of a new era for the estate and its Château, which gradually became the exceptional address you discover today.

Tragedy at the château

Following the merger of the municipalities, the property was acquired by the new municipality of Chaudfontaine. A fire ravaged the Château on the very night it was presented to the municipal councilors, the region, and the press.

A new ambition for the estate

After a discreet initial launch in the early 2000s, the thermal center and its estate experienced a true revival starting in 2003, driven by the momentum of regional investors with clear ambitions.

This period notably marked the development of the Château des Thermes into a true well-being destination with the opening of the hotel, the creation of treatment cabins, and the gourmet restaurant.

The estate expands

The Château des Thermes began a phase of rapid development with the opening of a 7-room hotel, the creation of 18 treatment cabins, and the installation of a gourmet restaurant.

Starting in 2007, the estate continued its expansion with the addition of more than 40 rooms, a seminar space, a Zen garden, and an indoor pool. In 2009, an aesthetic clinic completed the site's well-being offering.

In 2010, a new phase of modernization was launched with the expansion of the restaurants, the creation of relaxation rooms, the renovation of the thermal areas, and the development of a room dedicated to group classes.

The Château des Thermes then employed around fifty staff members, confirming its place among the leading well-being destinations in Belgium.

Upscaling and transformation

In 2012, all treatment cabins were renovated, with the addition of two extra cabins as well as double cabins dedicated to balneotherapy, offering an even more exclusive treatment experience.

In 2016, the estate underwent a major transformation: expansion of the two restaurants, renovation of the bar and kitchens, and the creation of a VIP area including treatment cabins, a champagne bar, and a relaxation room.

The hotel added a third floor with the Liège Suite, while the thermal baths and their indoor and outdoor spaces were entirely redesigned and modernized, accompanied by a global upgrade of the treatment cabins.

Nature reclaims its rights

In July 2021, in the midst of the health crisis, terrible floods disfigured the Liège landscape. The Chaudfontaine region was particularly affected; the entire Château des Thermes estate was underwater... everything was destroyed.

Thanks to the incredible mobilization of our entire team, our partners, and above all, a lot of elbow grease, the transformed Château des Thermes de Chaudfontaine reopened its doors to spa guests just 8 months after the disaster. And the story continues!
